Terms of service
Last updated October 29, 2026
1. Agreement
These terms are an agreement between you and Tao Tang, an individual who runs LoreClerk as a sole operator (“we”). By creating an account or using LoreClerk you accept them, together with the Privacy policy and the Acceptable use policy.
2. The service
LoreClerk is an online workbench for writing long-form fiction: an editor for books and chapters, story notes, continuity checks, beta-reader rounds, publishing tools, and optional AI features that draft, rewrite and check text at your request. Features can change as we improve the product; we’ll tell you before removing anything you pay for.
3. Your account
You must be at least 16, and old enough to agree to these terms where you live. Give accurate details and keep your password safe; you’re responsible for what happens under your account. One person per account; Studio seats are for the people named on them.
4. Plans and credits
Free costs nothing. Writer is US$15 a month or US$150 a year; Pro is US$29 a month or US$290 a year. Studio is arranged with us directly. Each plan includes a monthly allowance of credits, which AI features use; you can also buy credit packs. Current prices and limits are on the pricing page.
Founding price: the first 500 paying members get 30% off Writer or Pro (US$10.50 or US$105 for Writer, US$20.30 or US$203 for Pro, a month or a year). It applies for as long as your subscription continues without a break, including when you switch between Writer and Pro, and ends if you cancel. Writer and Pro can be tried free for 7 days without a card, once per account.
Plan credits carry over at most one month (your balance from the plan is capped at two months’ allowance) and end when the plan ends. Credits from packs never expire and stay after you cancel. When both are available, plan credits are used first.
Connecting your own AI provider key (Writer and above) means those tasks are billed by your provider, not in credits.
5. Payment and automatic renewal
Payments are processed by our merchant of record, Waffo, which is the seller on your receipt and handles tax, invoices and refunds. Prices are shown before tax; tax for your country is added at checkout.
Paid plans renew automatically at the end of each billing period (every month or every year) at the price then in effect, until you cancel. By subscribing you authorize the charge to your payment method each period. We’ll tell you by email at least 7 days before a price change applies to you.
If a renewal payment fails, your plan stays on while the payment is retried; if it can’t be collected, the plan ends and your account moves to Free. Credit packs are one-time purchases.
Upgrades take effect straight away and you pay the prorated difference; downgrades take effect at the end of the current period.
6. Cancellation
Cancel any time in Plan & usage or in the billing portal. Cancelling stops the next renewal; the plan stays on until the end of the period you paid for, then your account moves to Free. Nothing you wrote is deleted or locked. You can undo a cancellation before the period ends.
7. Refunds
We refund in full: duplicate charges, charges made after a cancellation had taken effect, and a billing period in which LoreClerk was unavailable to you for 72 hours or more in total because of our fault.
Unused months of a yearly plan and partly used periods aren’t refunded, except where the law where you live requires it. Credit packs can be refunded within 14 days of purchase if you haven’t used any of their credits.
When a payment is refunded, the plan it paid for ends and the plan credits it gave are removed; credits from packs you bought separately aren’t touched. To ask for a refund write to [email protected] with your account email and the date of the charge. The same rules are on Cancelling and refunds.
8. Billing problems
If a charge looks wrong, write to [email protected] before disputing it with your bank. We reply within 2 business days and fix confirmed errors within 5 business days. A chargeback pauses paid features until it’s resolved.
9. Your writing and AI output
Your manuscripts, notes and uploads belong to you; we claim no ownership. You give us only the permission needed to store, process and display them to run the service for you and the people you share them with. We don’t train AI models on your writing, and we don’t sell it.
Text produced by AI features at your request is yours to use, as far as the law allows. AI output can be wrong, inconsistent or similar to existing text: review it before you publish, and you’re responsible for what you publish. Continuity checks help catch mistakes; they don’t guarantee there are none.
10. Acceptable use
Use LoreClerk lawfully and within the Acceptable use policy, which lists what may not be created with our AI features, how instructions are checked, and how to report abuse. Don’t attack, overload, scrape or resell the service, or share accounts to get around limits.
11. Suspension and termination
You can delete your account at any time in Account settings. We may suspend or close an account that seriously or repeatedly breaks these terms or the Acceptable use policy, fails to pay, or puts other users or the service at risk. Unless the law or safety prevents it, we tell you why and give you the chance to export your writing first.
If we close an account without your breach, or stop offering LoreClerk, we refund the unused part of any prepaid period and give at least 30 days’ notice to export your work.
12. Disclaimers and liability
We work to keep LoreClerk available and your data safe, with daily verified backups, but the service is provided “as is”, without warranties of uninterrupted operation or fitness for a particular purpose. Keep your own copies with the export tools.
To the extent the law allows, we aren’t liable for indirect or consequential losses, and our total liability for any claim is limited to what you paid us in the 12 months before it. Nothing here limits liability that can’t be limited by law, or your rights as a consumer.
13. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. For changes that matter we email account holders at least 30 days before they apply; if you don’t agree, you can cancel and stop using LoreClerk before then.
14. Governing law
These terms are governed by the law of the place where Tao Tang, an individual who runs LoreClerk as a sole operator is established, without affecting the mandatory consumer protections of the country where you live. Before going to court, write to us so we can try to resolve it informally.
