Your data
Your work, your rules
What happens to your writing in LoreClerk, in plain words: what AI does and never does, when your text goes to an AI provider, what we keep, and how to take it with you or delete it.
How AI fits
AI in LoreClerk is a clerk and a second reader. You write the book.
What it does
- Reads your chapters to check them against your story notes, and quotes what it finds.
- Proposes updates to your story notes from each chapter. You confirm them.
- Drafts a chapter only when you ask, from your brief, as two options. Pick one, or neither.
What it never does
- Writes into your chapter without your say. Whatever you replace is kept as a version.
- Trains on your work. We don't either.
- Drafts or rewrites while check-only mode is on.
The checks still use a model to read your chapters. Our data page says exactly when text leaves, and where it goes.
What we do with your writing
- We don’t train models on itWe send text to AI providers only to generate or check what you asked for, and we don’t use your writing to train our own models.
- It belongs to youYour manuscript, notes, story notes and drafts are yours. We claim no rights to any of it.
- AI writing can stay offTurn off AI writing in Account settings and the studio only checks: no chapter drafts, rewrites or drafted briefs. Continuity checks and fix suggestions still work.
When text goes to an AI provider
- When you askDrafting a chapter, rewriting a selection, drafting a brief, checking a chapter, Suggest a fix, and the steps of the new-book wizard.
- In the backgroundWhen you mark a chapter final, we update its story notes and the summaries of the chapter, volume and book. Automatic checks (after each AI draft by default, or on save or daily if you choose), continuity scans, whole-book checks, and gathering story notes during import also read your chapters.
- Only what the task needsThe chapter or passage involved, plus the context the task uses, such as the brief, story notes and summaries of earlier chapters.
- With your own keyIf you connect your own provider, those tasks go to that provider, under your account and its terms. If it fails, we don’t switch to ours.
- What providers may do with itOur promise covers LoreClerk: we don’t train on your writing and don’t sell it. What a provider may do with the text it receives is set by its own terms, so each one is listed below with a link.
Take it with you
- Export everything, anytimeOne ZIP with every book (Markdown or Word), its story notes, and your notes with their attachments. The download link lasts 7 days.
- One book at a timeEach book’s Publish page exports EPUB, Word or Markdown. Files exported from LoreClerk import back exactly: chapters, titles, volumes and paragraphs.
Backups and deletion
- Delete a bookIt goes to Trash on your bookshelf for 30 days, and you can restore it until then. After that it’s deleted for good, with its chapters, outlines, story notes and snapshots.
- Delete your accountYou’re signed out everywhere at once. Sign in within 30 days to cancel. After that, your books, notes and story notes are deleted for good. Credit amounts stay in our ledger for accounting, no longer linked to you.
- Encrypted backups, kept elsewhereEach backup is encrypted before it leaves the server and stored with an S3-compatible storage provider. The key that opens backups isn’t kept on the server.
- Every backup is test-restoredAfter each nightly backup, we restore it into a scratch database to prove it can be brought back. If that check fails, we’re alerted.
- Backups age outWe back up once a day and keep 7 daily, 4 weekly and 6 monthly copies. Deleted text can stay in an encrypted backup for up to about six months, then it’s gone.
