How to do the common things.
Six short guides, from your first week to your first book. Stuck on something else? Write to [email protected].
Bring in a book you’ve already written
Works with Word (.docx), EPUB, plain text, Markdown, and PDFs with selectable text.
- Open Books and click Import. The arrow beside it lets you choose what happens next: keep writing, check consistency, or translate.
- Drop in your file, tick I wrote this manuscript, or I have the right to use it, then click Start import.
- In Check chapters, look over how the book was split. Very long, empty or out-of-order chapters are marked for you, and you can merge one with the next.
- Click Next: gather story notes, or Import text only to skip that for now.
- In Confirm story notes, keep the characters, places and rules that look right. Leave Scan for continuity issues ticked if you want the report straight away, then click Create book.
Size limits: 60 MB for EPUB and Word, 20 MB for text and Markdown, 10 MB for PDF. A scanned PDF has no text to read; import the original Word file instead.
Read a mistake check
Every flag quotes the earlier line it conflicts with, so you can judge it quickly.
- For the whole book, open it and go to Continuity. The first time, click the free scan button: your first 50 chapters are scanned free.
- Issues are listed most serious first. Click Open chapter … under one to see the line underlined in the writing studio.
- In the studio, the This chapter tab lists each issue as Must fix, Worth a look or Note, with the earlier line it relies on.
- Fix the text yourself, or click Suggest a fix and choose Use this or dismiss it.
- Done? Click Mark as fixed. Meant it that way? Click Ignore and it stays quiet. To check one chapter on its own, click Check this chapter.
A check only reads. Your text is never changed unless you change it or use a fix.
Invite beta readers
Readers don’t need an account, and the page works on a phone.
- Open the book, go to Beta readers and click New reading round.
- Under What to share, pick one chapter or a range of up to 30. Set Open for and the Reader limit.
- If you like, add up to three Chapter-end questions, tick Ask for an access code, or Add a faint watermark with each reader’s name.
- Click Create round. Then Copy link and send it, or click Invite by email to give each reader a personal link.
Their notes show up in the studio’s Comments tab. Close round stops the link; comments and answers stay.
Turn AI writing off
For writers who want the checks and nothing else.
- Click your avatar, top right, and choose Account settings.
- Go to Preferences. Under AI in the studio, switch AI writing off.
Drafting chapters, rewriting a selection and drafting briefs leave the studio. Continuity checks and fix suggestions keep working. Switch it back on any time.
Export your book
One book for readers or an editor, or everything at once for your own records.
- One book: open it and go to Publish. Fill in Details, and in Check click Run the check to catch missing titles and leftover TODO notes.
- In Export, pick EPUB, Word or PDF and click the export button. Your files appear in the list below with a Download link that lasts 7 days.
- Everything at once: click your avatar, choose Account settings, then Your data. Under Export all manuscripts, choose Markdown or Word and click Start export. We notify you when the ZIP is ready.
Files exported from LoreClerk import back exactly: chapters, titles, volumes and paragraphs.
Turn your serial into a KDP book
For an arc you’ve finished posting: collect it into one book for Kindle and paperback. Only the exported files change. Your chapters, notes and numbering in the studio stay as they are.
- Open the book and go to Publish. In Details, under Chapters to include, choose All chapters, Up to a chapter, or Pick volumes. For Book 2, pick the volume that holds chapters 31–60.
- In Compile as a book, fill in Series name and Book number. They go on the title page and into the ebook, so stores can group the books.
- Tick Remove author’s notes. It finds A/N, Patreon and Discord plugs, “thanks for reading” and schedule updates at the start and end of chapters. Click See what will be removed to read each one with its chapter, and untick any you want to keep.
- Tick Number chapters from 1 in this book. Chapters 31–60 come out as 1–30. Titles stay; an old number at the start of a title (“Chapter 31 –”) is dropped so the two don’t clash.
- In Amazon KDP, switch on Also check against Amazon KDP’s rules. Add a Description for KDP if you want a shorter one, up to 7 Keywords, and the Paperback trim size: 5×8, 5.25×8, 5.5×8.5 or 6×9 in.
- In Check, click Run the check. KDP items carry a KDP tag and sit with the rest under Must fix, Worth fixing and For reference. A KDP must-fix is something KDP would turn the book down for; it doesn’t stop you exporting.
- In Export, pick EPUB for Kindle and PDF for the paperback. The PDF page size follows your trim size, and the inside margin widens with the page count, as KDP asks. A5 and Letter are there for other printing.
Nothing is sent to Amazon. You upload the files on KDP yourself, and you can export again after any change.
